The Opportunity

We are looking for two part-time AI, Data & Automation Interns to support work across data, reporting, automation, AI-assisted solution delivery, and internal business systems.

This role is ideal for students, recent graduates, or early-career candidates who are curious, technically minded, organised, and comfortable using AI tools to solve practical business problems.  We are looking for a commitment of 20 hrs per week.

You will support a busy data and automation function that works across reporting, Power BI, SQL, Power Platform, business process improvement, system integrations, AI prototypes, documentation, and production support.

We do not expect candidates to be experts in every area. One successful candidate may be stronger in data, BI, reporting, and automation, while another may be stronger in AI-assisted prototyping, coding, testing, and solution delivery. Both roles require good judgement, clear communication, careful documentation, and a willingness to learn quickly.

A key part of the role will involve helping colleagues take ideas or AI-generated prototypes — for example, solutions built with Claude, Codex, ChatGPT, Copilot, or similar tools — and support their journey toward reliable, maintainable, production-ready solutions under appropriate supervision.

About the role:

Depending on your skills and the needs of the team, responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting colleagues who are experimenting with AI-assisted tools, prototypes, automations, or scripts.
  • Helping turn rough ideas, prompts, and prototypes into clearer requirements and practical next steps.
  • Reviewing AI-generated or AI-assisted outputs critically, rather than accepting them at face value.
  • Testing small apps, scripts, workflows, reports, or automations before they are used more widely.
  • Identifying gaps, edge cases, assumptions, bugs, risks, or missing documentation in early-stage solutions.
  • Supporting the movement of suitable prototypes toward production under supervision.
  • Creating documentation, runbooks, support notes, test plans, and handover materials.
  • Supporting SQL-based reporting, data checks, and simple analysis.
  • Helping maintain, test, and improve Power BI reports and dashboards.
  • Assisting with Power Automate, Power Apps, workflow, or integration improvements.
  • Investigating data quality issues and summarising findings clearly.
  • Mapping data sources, report ownership, refresh schedules, dependencies, and known issues.
  • Helping organise backlog items, tickets, technical notes, and small delivery tasks.
  • Reviewing manual processes and identifying opportunities for automation or AI-assisted improvement.

Role & Responsibilities – key outputs :

Data, BI & Automation Support

This area may include:

  • Writing or updating basic SQL queries.
  • Checking data quality and investigating mismatched figures.
  • Supporting Power BI reports and dashboards.
  • Documenting data sources, report logic, refresh schedules, and dependencies.
  • Helping with Power Automate or Power Apps changes.
  • Creating process maps, support notes, and operational runbooks.
  • Helping clean up backlogs of reporting, data, or automation requests.
  • Supporting recurring reporting or data validation tasks.

AI-Assisted Solution Delivery

This area may include:

  • Reviewing prototypes created with Claude, Codex, ChatGPT, Copilot, or similar tools.
  • Helping colleagues clarify what problem a prototype is meant to solve.
  • Testing AI-generated code, scripts, apps, workflows, or automations.
  • Checking whether an AI-generated solution is reliable, secure, maintainable, and fit for purpose.
  • Improving documentation around AI-assisted solutions.
  • Helping create test cases, acceptance criteria, and deployment notes.
  • Supporting handover from prototype into normal support and maintenance processes.
  • Helping colleagues use AI tools more effectively and responsibly.

Example tasks

You might be asked to:

  • Review a prototype created by a colleague using Claude or Codex and summarise what needs fixing before it can be used more widely.
  • Turn a rough AI-generated solution into a clearer backlog item with requirements, risks, assumptions, and next steps.
  • Test whether an automation works across realistic scenarios and document the results.
  • Add basic validation, logging, comments, or error handling to a small script or workflow.
  • Document how a Power BI report is built and where its data comes from.
  • Write a SQL query to compare source data against reporting outputs.
  • Investigate why numbers differ between two reports.
  • Create a runbook for a recurring data, reporting, or automation process.
  • Map a manual business process and suggest where automation or AI could help.
  • Prepare simple documentation or a demo for an internal AI-assisted workflow.

Knowledge and Skills

A strong candidate will be able to:

  • Use AI tools confidently but not blindly.
  • Break down vague business requests into clear tasks.
  • Spot when a prototype is fragile, incomplete, insecure, or poorly documented.
  • Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Test their work properly before handing it over.
  • Document work so that someone else can understand and maintain it.
  • Escalate risks, uncertainty, or production concerns rather than guessing.
  • Balance curiosity and experimentation with care, structure, and reliability.

Experience with any of the following would be helpful:

  • ChatGPT, Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot, or other AI tools.
  • Prompting AI tools effectively.
  • SQL.
  • Python.
  • JavaScript or TypeScript.
  • Power BI.
  • Excel.
  • Power Automate.
  • Power Apps.
  • Azure DevOps.
  • Git or GitHub.
  • APIs and integrations.
  • Testing and debugging.
  • Data modelling basics.

You do not need to have all these skills. We are more interested in evidence that you can learn quickly, work carefully, and use technology thoughtfully to solve real problems.

Working arrangement

  • Number of roles: 2
  • Hours: Approximately 20 hours per week
  • Location: Glasgow/Hybrid
  • Duration: 3 months / 6 months /1 to 2 years/possible perm roles
  • Reporting to: Data Engineer
